This meaty, crunchy Cuban sandwich is the perfect warm lunch treat.  Traditionally made with roasted pork, I made mine using leftover pulled pork. The savoriness of the pork meats mixed in with the crunch pickle and gooey cheese on a crispy bread make for one irresistible treat.  You need to try this!

Step 1: Pulled Pork in a Cuban Sandwich?

Cuban Sandwich Ingredients

A traditional Cuban sandwich is made using two different pork meats, roasted pork and ham, swiss cheese, pickle and yellow mustard all pressed together on a flat top making the sandwich crunchy, warm and flat for ease of eating.  I had a lot of pulled pork left over from a previous cook, therefore decided to use it in my Cuban sandwich in place of traditional roast pork.  And let me tell you, I don’t think I will ever have it any other way!  The smokey savoriness from the pulled pork was the perfect protein filling for this sandwich.

Pulled Pork and Ham

To get things started, preheat the griddle to 375 degrees.  First, warm up the pork.  Add a little butter to the flat top and throw on the refrigerated pulled pork and honey ham.  About 10 minutes in, the meat should be perfect with light color marks.

Dad’s Seasonings

Must have grillin seasonings!

Step 2: Assembly time.

It’s all about the layers in this sandwich.  For the bread, I went with a classic french roll which is the perfect size and shape for this recipe.  Smear a generous layer of yellow mustard to the bottom of the bread and start with a layer of swiss cheese.  Next, fold in a few slices of the honey ham and a generous scoop of the warmed pull pork.  Top it all off with another layer of swiss cheese and finally the pickle slice on top.  Add more yellow mustard to the top bun and this Cuban sandwich is ready to hit the griddle

Step 3: How to grill the perfect Cuban Sandwich.

Keep the griddle warm on a medium setting or 375 degrees. Add more butter and place the sandwiches on the flat top pressing down to flatten the form.  Grill 5 minutes per side, pressing down each time.  At the end you should have a nice, crispy, flat on the go Cuban sandwich.  Enjoy!
