Everyone by now knows my love for bourbon and grilling.  I enjoy combining the two together in my recipes.  This time around, I made a bourbon chicken sandwich that was full of flavor and tenderness.  A great summer bbq dinner option to enjoy good food and hopefully good weather.

Step 1: How to grill the perfect chicken breast.

Chicken breast are probably one of the hardest parts of the bird to grill.  More than not, this piece of meat is over cooked making it dry.  The secret is timing and temp.

First, start with lightly pounding the chicken breast in a ziplock bag.  This process helps you shape the chicken into an even filet.  Do not pound too hard as you’ll end up with thin chicken cutlets.

Next, apply some olive oil as the binder and season with your choice of BBQ all purpose rub.  Season all sides and these are ready to hit the grill.

Preheat the grill to 450 degrees and set for direct heat. Total cook time should be no longer than 10 minutes flipping the chicken halfway through the cook.  Remove the grilled chicken breasts off the grill at 160 degrees internal temperature.

Let it rest for 10 minutes which will allow the meat to reach it’s final temp of 165 degrees and lock in all the wonderful juices creating a perfectly tender cut

Must have grillin seasonings!

Step 2: How to make a homemade bourbon BBQ sauce.

Bourbon BBQ sauce ingredients

This homemade bourbon BBQ sauce is sweet, savory and what brings this whole dish together.

In a sauce pan add ketchup, brown sugar, bourbon of choice, worcestershire sauce, molasses, hot sauce, apple cider vinegar and more all purpose rub.  Whisk the ingredients together over low heat.  Bring it to a simmer and continue cooking until the sauce thickens.  The heat will cook off any alcohol content from the bourbon making it safe to eat for children.

If you prefer to have a non alcoholic sauce, just use the same ingredients excluding the bourbon itself.

Step 3: Time to assemble the Bourbon Chicken Sandwich.

Now that the chicken has rested and sauce is made, it’s time to assemble.  To really get the full impact of the sauce flavor, dunk the entire grilled chicken breast into the bourbon sauce making sure you get a nice thick coating throughout.

For the breading I used traditional sandwich buns.  Start with adding the sauced up chicken breast and keep the rest of the ingredients simple.  A little bit of red onion, butter lettuce and tomato is all you need to enjoy this mouth watering, full flavor bourbon chicken sandwich.  Enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions:

What can I use to replace the alcohol?

There are two things you can do to the recipe to avoid alcohol. First, you can replace it with apple cider vinegar or just avoid the ingredient all together.

Can I make this in the oven or stove top?

All my recipes can be replicated in the oven, stove top or gas grill. You do not need a big green egg or weber grill to replicate any of my recipes.
