This is not your mama’s meatball sandwich!  I was craving a warm meatball sub and decided to make my own version which as you know, required some heat.   This spicy smoked meatball sandwich recipe has the best of both worlds.  It has the traditional meatball and marinara taste followed by some heat from the tabasco. And for some bonus points, I smoked the meatballs on the grill to add an extra layer of flavor.  These turned out amazing!

How to make spicy meatballs.

Spicy Meatball Sandwich ingredients

This recipe is very simple and requires only a few ingredients.  It’s a twist on a traditional meatball sandwich with smoked meatballs and some heat using tabasco.  The smokiness from the grill as well as the hot sauce were definitely the winning secret ingredients.

For the meat, I went with a mix of 2/3 ground pork and 1/3 ground beef (80/20). In a large mixing bowl, add in the ground meat, salt, pepper, 1 raw egg, breadcrumbs, 1/2 diced white onion, chopped parsley and a few drops of Tabasco Original Red Sauce.  With your hands, mix all the ingredients together.  Make sure to blend in all the loose ingredients massaging them into the meat.

Raw formed meatballs

Scoop up enough of the mixture and roll a golf sized ball. Repeat this until you use up all the meat.  Place the raw meatballs on a wire rack and let’s get the grill going.

How to smoke the perfect meatballs.

Heat up the grill to 250 degrees and set it up for indirect heat.  Place the wire rack loaded with the meatballs and let it smoke on the grill until they reach 145 degrees internal temp.

Pull them off the grill once they reach the desired temperature and let them rest before assembling the sub.

Next, fill a sub roll with the spicy meatballs, pour some marinara sauce, cover with shredded mozzarella and put it back on the grill to crisp up the sami and melt the cheese.

After a few minutes, remove from the grill, add a few more sprinkles of the Tabasco red pepper sauce, some freshly chopped parsley and enjoy this amazing spicy smoked meatball sandwich.
