A grilled steak doesn’t need much else than salt and pepper. It’s one of my favorite things to make at home. But sometimes you just want to change it up a bit. I give you the grilled coffee marinated steak. For the protein, I went with a NY Strip. The cut is a little firmer than a ribeye and pairs great with any sauce. It’s a great way to change up a classic recipe and try something different. Plus it’s the perfect marriage, coffee and meat.

How to make the coffee marinate.
Start off with a cup of black coffee. For this recipe I used Cometeer coffee which are frozen coffee capsules. I used 1 capsule and added some water.
To the coffee, add some Worcestershire sauce, dijon mustard, balsamic vinegar, olive oil and black pepper. Mix all the ingredients together well.
Next, take the steak and score it across the top and bottom in a crisscross pattern. This allows for the marinate to infuse itself into the meat to get a hint of coffee with each bite.
Place the scored steaks into a ziplock bag and pour in coffee marinade. Let these sit in the delicious liquid while the grill heats up to the right temperature.

How to grill the perfect coffee marinated steak
While the steak stays submerged in the coffee liquid gold, it’s time to get the grill heated up. Set the big green egg grill to 450 degrees. Once the temperature is reached, place the steak on the grill on direct heat.
Flip the steak every minute for build up a beautiful crust. This process will take about 5 minutes in total or until it reaches 135 degrees internal temperature. Set it aside for 10 minutes to rest.
Temperature Guide For Filet Mignon
- Medium-rare: 120-130°
- Medium: 130-140°
- Medium-well: 140-150°
Steak Grilling Tip
- Bring the steak to room temperature before placing on the grill. This will allow the steak to cook more evenly throughout.
It’s very important to rest any protein after a cook. This process helps the meat to cook to its required temperature and redistributes all those wonderful juices that will create a beautifully tender slice of meat.
Once the meat has properly rested, slice up that coffee marinated steak, sprinkle some freshly chopped parsley and enjoy!
Frequently Asked Questions:
Type of steak depends on what you are trying to grill up. For hot and fast look for cuts with good marbling like a ribeye or NY strip. If you are cooking a roast or stew, look for cuts that are cheaper and meatier like a chuck roast.
The internal temperature all depends on how you want or prefer your steak cooked. For a medium rare, remove it at between 120-125 degrees. If you are going for a medium cooked steak, anywhere between 135-140 degrees. Anything over will be well done. Remember to always rest the meat for 10 minutes before slicing.
